Cleaning the engine bay is about more than looks — but it's risky done wrong. The rules and the parts to protect.

Engine Bay Cleaning: When It's Worth It and How to Do It Safely

Some people avoid the engine bay entirely out of fear of electronics; others blast it with a pressure washer. Both are wrong.

Why bother

  • Spot leaks early — on a clean surface any oil or coolant seep is immediately visible.
  • Better cooling — a film of oil and dust acts as insulation.
  • Protect wiring — accumulated oil hardens insulation over time.
  • Resale value — a clean bay instantly raises buyer confidence.

Non-negotiable rules

  1. Cold or barely warm engine only. Water on hot metal risks cracking.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal or cover the battery well.
  3. Cover sensors, alternator and the fuse box with plastic.
  4. No direct high pressure. Low pressure, fine spray only.
  5. Dry with air and leave the bonnet open until fully dry before starting.
A simple rule: use far less water than you'd expect. The goal is to dissolve grease and rinse it with a light mist, not flood the bay.

The steps

Remove leaves and loose debris with a brush and air → apply a dedicated engine degreaser → let it dwell without drying → agitate with a medium brush → rinse with a light mist → dry with air and towels → dress black plastics with a restorer.

How often?

Once or twice a year is plenty for a normal daily car. More often adds nothing and increases the chance of water reaching somewhere it shouldn't.

Engine bay cleaning is simple work that is very unforgiving of mistakes — which is why we do it with little water and a lot of patience.
