Cleaning a Car Interior: The Order That Halves the Work
A practical guide to cleaning your car interior in the right sequence — roof to floor — including fabric, leather and dashboard.

Most people start in the wrong place: the seats. Then dashboard dust falls onto seats they just cleaned. Order isn't a detail here — it decides whether this takes one hour or three.
Top to bottom, inside to out
Gravity works for you if you respect it. Start at the headliner, finish at the carpet; start at the centre of the cabin, finish at the door shuts.
The sequence
- Empty everything — mats, contents, under the seats. You cannot clean a full cabin.
- Dust the headliner and door cards with a soft dry brush.
- Vents and seams — detail brush and compressed air. This is what separates "clean" from genuinely clean.
- Vacuum — seats, then between them, then carpet, then boot. Slide the seats fully forward and back.
- Dashboard and hard surfaces — neutral interior cleaner on the towel, never sprayed onto the panel, so nothing seeps behind buttons.
- Fabric seats — upholstery cleaner, medium brush, circular motion, then extract the moisture.
- Leather — dedicated leather cleaner, then conditioner. Never an all-purpose cleaner.
- Interior glass — always last; anything done earlier leaves overspray on it.
- Mats — cleaned outside the car and returned fully dry.
- Spraying cleaner directly on the dashboard — it runs into switches and screens.
- Glossy dressing on the steering wheel — it becomes slippery and unsafe.
- Putting mats back damp — that's where mildew smell starts.
Why we avoid high gloss
Oily dressings look great for a day, then attract dust and throw reflections onto the windscreen while you drive. We finish surfaces with a satin, factory-like look that stays clean longer.
How long it takes
A deep interior with polish takes two to three hours on a mid-size car, more if the fabric is heavily soiled. Anyone promising 45 minutes is cleaning the surface only.
The difference between a surface clean and a real one shows in the places nobody looks: under the seats, between seat and console, inside the door shuts.
